Agreement for Halilovic loan to Sporting Gijón
FC Barcelona and Sporting Gijón have reached an agreement for the loan of Alen Halilovic for one season.
The Croatian joined Barça B last summer from Dynamo Zagreb, and played 30 games in Division 2B (22 as a starter), scoring 4 goals. Luis Enrique handed him his first team debut on 15 January 2015 in the Copa del Rey round of 16 match against Elche. Halilovic came on in the 62nd minute of the 4-0 win at the Martínez Valero as a replacement for Adama. And he very nearly scored, hitting the post with a strike from the edge of the area in the final minutes of the match. He joined the first team on their American Tour this summer, and featured in all three of the games against LA Galaxy, Man United and Chelsea. He also made his Camp Nou debut in the Joan Gamper Trophy match against AS Roma, coming on for Jordi Alba after 76 minutes. |

FC Barcelona to face BIIK-Kazygurt in UEFA Women's Champions League round of 16
Knocked out by FrankfurtBIIK-Kazygurt, who are currently top of their national league with a 100 per cent record, were originally formed in Almaty as Alma-KTZh, but relocated to Shymkent in 2010. Since then, they have appeared in the Champions League three times, going out each time at the round of 32 stage. In 2009/10 they went out toSparta Prague, in 2012/13 to Røa of Norway, and in last season’s edition they faced a tough opening fixture against eventual champions FFC Frankfurt, with Spanish international Vero Boquete in the side. However, the game in Shymkent ended 2-2, the only one the Germans failed to win in the whole competition. BIIK-Kazygurt were soundly defeated 4-0 in the return, but the first leg result is indication of how difficult the long journey to Kazakhstan can be.
|
Barça were not altogether fortunate with the outcome of the UEFA Women’s Champions League draw when they were matched with BIIK-Kazygurt of Kazakhstan. Although there were some potentially much more difficult opponents that they could have faced, the downside is the long journey of 7,000 kilometres and a ten-hour flight. On a more positive note, as Barça were seeded, they have the advantage of playing the second leg at home in the Miniestadi.
Tricky tripBIIK-Kazygurt was the first name to come out at Thursday’s draw in Nyon and the ball marked FC Barcelona was the next. The first leg, in the city of Shymken in the far south of Kazakhstan, will be on October 7 or 8, when the average temperature in the city is around 10 degrees centigrade. The return at the Miniestadi will be played a week later on October 14 or 15. |

The Club will appeal against Piqué's ban
Ter Stegen and Sandro think team will miss Piqué
Marc-André ter Stegen and Sandro Ramírez have both said they were sorry to hear about the four match ban for Gerard Piqué against which the Club has launched an appeal to the Appeals Committee. If the decision is confirmed, he would be an important absence for the side according to the two players who appeared at a promotional event on Wednesday in Barcelona.
The German goalkeeper said of Piqué: "He is an important player for us and we will miss him but we will try to do our best without him." The striker from the Canary Islands for his part described Piqué as a "key" player but at the same time stating that the squad was strong enough to deal with the defender's absence for the trip to San Mamés on Sunday to face Athletic. |
Gerard Piqué gets four-match suspension
We should be proud of what we are doing, says Rakitic
Just a day after losing on his first Spanish Super Cup in a Barça shirt, Ivan Rakitic has shown himself to be confident that the team can put it behind them ahead of Sunday’s first game in the 2015/16 league campaign. “Now it is time to wait for the league to start on Sunday, we are focused and we want that fifth trophy [World Club Cup], but we have to go little by little.” On the subject, the Croatian added, “we have won four out of five trophies and we should be proud of what we are doing.”
“Nobody wanted to win the six trophies more than us, but we were up against a strong side and we have to congratulate Athletic,” pointed out Rakitic in a promotional event on Tuesday in Barcelona. Rakitic also commented on a possible ban for Gerard Piqué following his sending off in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup final: “I am worried because Piqué is a very important player for us. A sending off like that, I am sure he did not mean anything he said, it’s just tension. If that is a dismissal then in every game there will be a lot of red cards. I hope there is not a long ban.” |
The other side of the Spanish Super Cup second leg
Third time lucky
For FC Barcelona to fail to win two games in a row is not a usual occurrence. However, when it has happened, the team has always bounced back. The last time that the side went two matches without victory came last season in the first half of the league campaign when they lost 3-1 against Real Madridand then 1-0 at home to Celta Vigo. Up until now, that had been the only time that Luis Enrique’s Barça team had not been victorious in two successive games. The team came back from that with no less than seven consecutive victories.
The two games against Real Madrid and Celta came on Match Day 9 and 10 of the league and were followed by four league victories against Almería, Sevilla, Valencia and Espanyol, two in the Champions League against Ajax and APOEL and one in the Copa del Rey against Huesca. The two defeats last season came in the league - this season the two games without a win have been a defeat and a draw against Athletic in the Spanish Super Cup. There are reasons for optimism ahead of Sunday’s visit to San Mamés on the opening weekend of the 2015/16 league campaign. |
Statement on Piqué's red card
FC Barcelona have presented arguments against the red card shown to Gerard Piqué in the 58th minute of the game against Athletic Club in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup.
The argument put forward is that the player did not address the referee's assistant in the terms included by referee Velasco Carballo in his subsequent report. |
Leo Messi sets another Spanish Super Cup record
FC Barcelona v Athletic Club by the numbers
With a big obstacle to overcome, Lionel Messi tried to take matters into his own hands as he attempted the most take-ons in the match (14).
Luis Suárez had the most shots on goal with five, but to no avail. Just like in the first leg at San Mamés, Barcelona hit the woodwork at the Camp Nou. Gerard Pique’s excellent half volley with his weaker left foot crashed off the crossbar after just six minutes to deny Barça a dream start. Claudio Bravo made his first appearance of the new season for Barcelona after rejoining the squad later than his colleagues due to Chile’s Copa America win. Alves, Mascherano, Pedro, Suárez and Messi were the only players from the first leg’s lineup to be in Monday’s starting eleven. |
A selection of facts and figures from the 1-1 draw in Monday night’s Spanish Super Cup second leg between FC Barcelona and Athletic Club:
Barça managed 17 shots on goal but just four of those were on target. Athletic ended the game with six attempts, eleven less than the home side. Typically, the Catalans dominated proceedings, as they enjoyed 69% of the possession over the 90 minutes. Javier Mascherano had a busy evening in defence, ending the night with the most interceptions (15) Dani Alves was the player who attempted the most passes, with a total of 104. Mascherano made the most successful passes, with 87 of his intended exchanges accurately finding their target as Alves came a close second with 84. |
